LuciadRIA and LuciadFusion Gain 20X faster Response Times for Spatial Queries20 April 2017
Leuven, Belgium - Luciad today announced it has earned Oracle Exadata Optimized status through the Oracle Partner Network (OPN), demonstrating that LuciadRIA and LuciadFusion have been tested and tuned on the Oracle Exadata Database Machine to deliver speed, scalability and reliability to customers. Luciad provides software solutions for Geospatial Situational Awareness and Visual Analytics. With 4D analysis and visualization of real-time and big data, Luciad technology powers today’s mission critical applications. Luciad is a Gold level member of the Oracle PartnerNetwork.
Luciad’s Browser solution LuciadRIA enables robust applications in the browser with the fluency and speed of a desktop application. LuciadRIA provides industry leading high-performance 2D maps and 3D globes to web application developers. LuciadFusion, Luciad’s mid-tier server solution, accesses and fuses multiple data sources, including Oracle Spatial, and provides that data efficiently to LuciadRIA or other interactive applications. By achieving Oracle Exadata Optimized status, Luciad was able to deliver the following results:
Highly interactive applications with over 200 million feature data sets including heat maps with sub-second response times
Fluent access to arbitrary sized 3D city databases
20 times faster response times for spatial queries on 175 million points, leading to sub-second response times for most queries
Sustained throughput of 100,000+ records per second for 20 times the number of users
25 times more requests per second for 3D City DB
Luciad’s LuciadRIA and LuciadFusion tested with Oracle Database 12.1 deployed on two full racks Oracle Exadata X6-2, 36 cores each, versus a baseline system with Quad-core CPU, 32 GB of RAM, DBMS running inside VirtualBox with Oracle Enterprise Linux.
Tests showed a 25-times speed increase compared to baseline for requesting tiles of 3D data containing 3D polygons and textures within a spatial extent, resulting in a 25 tiles per second compared to one tile per second in the baseline system. This far exceeded the expected minimum speedup of a factor 10 and led to smooth retrieval of buildings for a 3D visualization, without the popping artefacts (parts of the city popping up when retrieved from the DB) that were seen in the baseline test.
Oracle Exadata Optimized is part of the Oracle Exastack Optimized program which allows partners, such as Luciad, to leverage OPN enablement resources and dedicated lab environments to help develop, test and tune their applications on Oracle Exadata Database Machine, Oracle SuperCluster, Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud, Oracle Exalytics In-Memory Machine, Oracle Database Appliance and Oracle Big Data Appliance engineered systems.
By achieving Oracle Exadata Optimized status, Oracle recognizes Luciad for developing, testing and tuning LuciadRIA and LuciadFusion on Oracle Exadata Database Machine. This accomplishment is a testament to Luciad’s ability to deliver the extreme performance and reliability customers require.
“We can now assure customers that our situational awareness and visual analytics applications scale to big data sets with ease due to Oracle Exadata. The Oracle Database with Spatial Option for 3D city data sets scales linearly to any number of cores in the Exadata Machine without changes to our code”, said Frank Suykens, CTO, Luciad.
“Oracle Exastack Optimized recognizes partners who have optimized their solutions on a complete, integrated and cloud-ready infrastructure in order to help them accelerate innovation, unlock new features and functionality, and deliver superior value to users,” said David Hicks, Vice President, Worldwide ISV, OEM and Java Business Development, Oracle. “By achieving Oracle Exadata Optimized status, Luciad has demonstrated that LuciadRIA and LuciadFusion are tested and tuned to work with Oracle Exadata Database Machine to help deliver optimum performance, scalability and reliability to their customers.”

About the Oracle Exastack Program
The Oracle Exastack program helps enable Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and other members of Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN) to rapidly build and deliver faster, more reliable applications. Leveraging the Oracle Exastack program, qualifying OPN members have access to Oracle performance experts and dedicated labs for testing and tuning their applications on Oracle Exadata Database Machine, Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud, Oracle Exalytics In-Memory Machine, Oracle SuperCluster, Oracle Database Appliance and Oracle Big Data Appliance. Customers can be confident when selecting Oracle Exastack Optimized applications that they are supported, and have been tested and tuned with the goal to achieve optimal performance, scalability and reliability. Also part of the program, Oracle Exastack Ready is dedicated to helping ISVs run their solutions on the latest major release of Oracle Exadata Database Machine, Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud, Oracle Exalytics In-Memory Machine, Oracle SuperCluster, Oracle Database Appliance, Oracle Big Data Appliance and their component products, including Oracle Database, Oracle WebLogic Server, Oracle Solaris, Oracle Linux and Oracle VM. These products provide partners with a low cost and high performance infrastructure for database and application workloads across on-premise and cloud based environments. With an Oracle Exastack Optimized or Oracle Exastack Ready status achievement, partners will receive access to corresponding Oracle branding, logos and related benefits to effectively differentiate their offerings.
