Within these industries, Planetek Italia develops solutions for the observation of the Earth with remote sensing data from satellites, aircraft, and drones. They maintain space system software to exploit Earth observation and Planetary Exploration missions such as European Remote-Sensing Satellite (ERS), Envisat, COSMO-SkyMed, Mars Express, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Planck, and the upcoming Solar Orbiter launch.
Identifying where leaks in underground pipelines occur is a vital and expensive task. Satellite radar technology can give a good predictive indicator by measuring where the ground is subsiding around the pipelines. Although this technology is functional and the data is widely available, understanding and processing radar data requires specialized training and knowledge.
Planetek Italia built Rheticus Network Alert on the Hexagon Smart M.App platform, combining Smart M.App technology with the monitoring services available through Rheticus. These combined services let the end user automate complicated radar data processing, perform wide area monitoring, and deliver an automated information service to municipal bodies, helping them pinpoint where leaks are most likely to occur and prioritize their response teams.

SIMP Canosa is an integrated service for the monitoring and prevention of urban and environmental crimes. Developed by Planetek Italia and Intergraph Italia LLC, the solution allows for analysis and control of urbanization and the impact of other human activities in urban and extra-urban areas in the Municipality of Canosa di Puglia, Italy.
SIMP Canosa combines satellite imagery, sensors, cameras, and citizen reports with geospatial intelligence to give officials and the police a synopsis of crime phenomena in their areas so they can process information and identify priorities. All of this is done in a very short time, enabling quick actions and effective interventions. The solution is based on Hexagon Geospatial software, base maps, Earth observation data collected on a regular basis, and external information sources, such as the Information System for the Environmental Protection of the Italian Police.
Users can create and maintain digital geolocated dossiers related to environmental crimes. The entire system operates from a control panel that connects to municipal surveillance systems. Video streams from security cameras are captured and managed on a map, enabling storage and archiving of geotagged images noting the moment the crime was perpetrated.

Getting maximum detail from imagery and geoinformation data is crucial for imagery intelligence activities. To increase the amount of intelligence gleaned from such data, the Italian Armed Forces is working with Planetek Italia on the 3D IMINT project, which supports their targeting operational activities with extensive and innovative uses of remote sensing data and new generation elaboration algorithms.
The project’s solution, designed by Planetek Italia, uses Hexagon Geospatial’s ERDAS IMAGINE Professional, IMAGINE Expansion Pack, and SAR Interferometry add-on solutions. Within the 3D IMINT solution, workflows merge features extracted from SAR data to corresponding optical images to create a fused image that provides a more complete real-time view. The workflows then superimpose changes between SAR images acquired before and after an event onto optical images to assess changes caused by the events.
This optimized, real-time view proves a significant improvement in the accuracy of target recognition and classification.
